Our Story
Jessica Garibay started dreaming about a shelter in October 2018. She found a dog that had a 360° laceration around her neck. After calling all the associations in PV and other areas, she found no one to help. Jessica was fostering a puppy named Toast and couldn't bring the injured dog into her home. However, she refused to leave the dog alone in this condition. She took action by bringing the dog to the vet, paying for her stay there, and posting on Facebook groups to seek help. Nancy Middleton responded. She told Jessica that as soon as the dog recovered, she could take her to a ranch she owned, but not before, as there was nobody who could take proper care of her. This poor dog was also pregnant, about to give birth, and the pregnancy could not be terminated. She had her babies, and one day after, the puppies all died.
Once healed, Jessica and Nancy took her to the sheltered land, but as there was no fence, a couple of days later, she broke out of her kennel and escaped; she was never found. It was then that Jessica told Nancy she wanted to open a shelter that would never deny care for a dog in need. Nancy offered her land, she had previously bought for charitable use, to create the dog shelter. Jessica started the shelter with nothing but her own resources.
In February 2019 a group of people from Bucerias started to help. Fundraising events were planned, such as the first Bazaar, and volunteers began to get more involved in the shelter. In the months following, great strides were made. New kennels were built, a water pump to provide clean water for the dogs was installed, and a successful walking program was started, showing amazing results in the happiness and socialization of all our dogs was started.
We have created an amazing space for our dogs with safe clean kennels, a play area, and we are continuing to grow. We are constantly striving to make improvements to keep the dogs safe and healthy. We will keep everyone up to date on the shelter changes as they happen!!
